Corset
The concept
Inspired by the 1890s Symington's 'Pretty Housemaid' Corset, this piece features heavy cording panels and gussets, to provide gentle support. The hooks as a front colure have been sourced from a German Metal Worker, and reflect the curves and artistry of the gates of the House.
Reclaimed Materials
The main cream fabric in this corset, lighter canvas in the lining, and blue twill as a bias binding motif, are all secondhand fabrics sourced from the Univerity's collection of materials.
Embroidery Flossing
As with all of the pieces in the collection, they hold secrets if you look - much like Cheswick House. Based on the gardens of the estate, french knots have been used to replicate the multitude of florals that surround the home.
A contemporary take on Victorian flossing is a recurring detail throughout the collection. Inspired by the ever-present florals of Cheswick House’s gardens, delicate embroidery - primarily composed of French knots - appears across several pieces.
This motif first emerged during the development of the collection’s first corset toiles and serves as not only a nod to the elegance of traditional Victorian undergarments but also to the functional aspect - used as a reinforcement tool in corset boning, to increase comfort for the wearer and prolong the life of the garment.
